The painting “On the Sailboat” by Caspar David Friedrich, created around 1818, belongs to the German Romantic era. It depicts a couple, seen from behind, holding hands on the bow of a sailing ship. The silhouette of a romantic-looking city can be seen in the background.
The work is interpreted as an expression of human and social longing, with the ship heading toward an imaginary city. A pencil drawing of the ship’s bow from 1806 is in the National Museum in Oslo.
